Building an elegant bridge between yesterday and today.

The Deutschlandhaus in Hamburg’s Gänsemarkt has an impressive history.

But a modern and economically viable usage of the floor areas in the existing building was no longer possible. After intensive discussions, also with public involvement, and consideration of the advantages and disadvantages of retaining the existing building with its associated history, the decision was finally taken to demolish and rebuild it.

Here, at this very prominent site at the western entrance to Hamburg's city centre, the owner, ABG Real Estate Group, will create an office building that is in keeping with the tradition of the location while at the same time adapted to today's needs for flexible and diverse uses.

For the structural engineers, the building measures pose special challenges, among others on account of the geometry of the architect’s design. The most striking aspect is the interior. On entering the building and taking a short escalator, a spectacular palm hall comes into view as a central, connecting element, almost 40 metres high and crowned by a filigree light dome.

Thanks to its sophisticated overall structural concept, the building with its special geometry will get along without any supporting structures so that the architect's requirements for a low floor height can be met. After all, the heights in the existing building were also subject to restrictions and, with a view to the economic viability of the project, the client's wishes regarding rentable space had to be taken into account.

The result will be a very special building, creating its own identity just like the old Deutschlandhaus.

New connection following old traditions.
