Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Once upon a time the Beatles lived here. And since 2011, young people from all round the world can once again stay in the former Klockmannhaus, today’s Generator Hostel Hamburg. For decades, the old, listed brick building opposite Hamburg’s Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe has dominated the eastern environs of the city’s main railway station. Klockmannhaus came into being in 1926 through the expansion and total rebuilding of the old Savoy Hotel, the fabric of which dated from the year 1870.

Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, the old floor structure of wooden beams, steel girders and steel pillars was given a complete makeover in terms of statics, soundproofing and fire protection. Cracks in the existing brickwork were repaired, new windows installed and the building newly equipped throughout with modern heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Building work on the existing structure produced various surprises, also for the structural engineers. Short-notice solutions and a pragmatic approach were needed in order to keep to the finely-calculated construction deadline.

A new annex with a very modern, horizontally-structured facade agreeably supplements the venerable listed building.

Thus the historic site has been restored to its original use, but now in the spirit of today’s times with an interior space club and recreation lounge. Yeah!
