High up in St. Georg.

Adenauerallee is one of the principal traffic arteries in Hamburg’s city centre. It leads from the city’s central station to the important railway junction at Berliner Tor. Here, in a central location, two structures are growing out of an already-existing building pit: an 8-storey hotel and an 18-storey apartment building. Both buildings stand on shared basement storeys with an underground garage.

The heights of the residential tower and hotel are oriented to those of the adjacent high-rise buildings. By staggering the heights of the tower – up to 58 metres above street level – and the shorter hotel building, a harmonious transition to the surrounding buildings in the St. Georg district is created.

The complete ensemble is highlighted by the 14-storey and up to 6-metre wide projection of the residential tower towards Adenauerallee – a challenge for the structural engineers.

The projection is suspended back onto reinforced concrete shear walls in such a way that no restrictions are imposed on either the architectural design or the usage. Various structural engineering tricks were also needed in the hotel building. It was thus possible to create the pillar-free rooms required on the ground floor for semi-public uses.

To prevent disturbance to the users of the apartments and the hotel due to vibrations from the directly adjacent underground railway lines, in close collaboration with the specialist planners and with optimisation of the foundations, the two buildings were horizontally isolated on elastomer mats, graduated according to the calculated soil contact stresses. The vibration measurements after completion of the works confirm the results of the calculations.
