New connection following old traditions.

Around the Binnenalster and Jungfernstieg is the largest collection of covered shopping malls in Europe. It began with the reconstruction following the Great Fire: the first malls were created in the 19th century. More were added later. Today, they contribute to the special flair of the city centre.

Diagonally across from Hamburg's oldest purely shopping and pedestrian zone, the venerable Alsterarkaden, the Europa Passage brings a new dimension to Hamburg’s traditional shopping malls. It connects Jungfernstieg and Mönckebergstrasse to each other.

Here, framed by the Binnenalster and Ballindamm, by existing buildings and underground stations, and by streets and alleys with their countless utility lines, a 160-metre long arcade has been created with five shopping levels. It is embedded into a seamless 16-storey building which extends as far as 24 metres into the ground.

In addition to retail spaces, the Europa Passage offers plenty of room for restaurants, storage, offices, parking and modern building services.

A big hole next to the Alster lake.
