Renewal during ongoing rail operation.
With its central location in Hamburg's rail network and more than 350 train movements per day, the railway overbridge at Anckelmannsplatz plays a decisive role in the city’s regional and supra-regional connections.
The structure, comprising a total of 12 riveted steel bridges, was built in 1905. The abutments and wing walls are decorated with ornamental elements made of natural stone, reminiscent of the Wilhelminian period. Now however, calculations and measurements of the remaining service life indicate that the structure is at the end of its useful life after almost 120 years of faithful service. A new replacement structure on the same site is needed.
Due to the large number of parties involved, the complex inventory of pipes and cables as well as various other technical installations belonging to the road and rail transport system, the planning challenge was above all to harmonise all the different interests and technical conditions. And, last but not least, the bridge is also a listed building.
The result is a new replacement structure in the form of a skewed 2-span steel composite construction. The two rows of massive piers in the old structure will be converted into an architecturally designed central row of piers in the new structure to enhance the road area. The new superstructures, weighing some 1,200 tonnes, will be erected on scaffolding above the road traffic and then shifted transversely into their final position. The abutments will be replaced during ongoing rail operation with the use of six auxiliary track bridges to ensure that rail traffic is kept running in the best possible way.
