Building while the trains are running.

With 60,000 passengers per day, Barmbek underground and suburban railway station is Hamburg’s third-largest interchange station. The station, an important infrastructural component, has been extensively rebuilt and modernised.

A key part of the rebuilding work involved the expansion of the reception areas. This required the renewal of four railway bridges. This task presented our engineers with major challenges, because it was necessary for the replacement of the structures to take place while the railway continued to operate normally.

One of the highlights was the sliding of the complete railway bridge construction – including walls and floor panel – underneath the temporary bridges. The integral reinforced concrete frame was prefabricated entirely on site.

In addition, with the redesign of the adjoining bus station, Barmbek station has acquired a fresh and modern appearance. The quality of the public spaces in the station complex and its environs has been substantially improved. Thus enhanced, the station has become an appropriate gateway to Hamburg’s ever more popular Barmbek district.

Far more than a station roof.
