Far more than a station roof.

Elegant engineering demands efficiency and creativity. This is particularly the case if construction site boundary conditions, high architectural design demands and client usage requirements are all exceptional.

The platform area for the four-track ICE train station is roofed by a 650 metre long and 55 metre wide unsupported composite panel. The panel, of jointless reinforced concrete, is only 30 cm thick. It is supported by 43 steel truss frames composed of compact steel sections with thicknesses up to 100 mm. The frames are grounded in continuous strip footings next to the outer tracks. The entire construction is designed to carry a future superstructure up to nine stories tall. That corresponds to a load of about 8,500 tons per truss.

The consistent application of simple design principles and the exploitation of the material properties of steel and concrete resulted in a highly economical structural solution overall. And it is also elegant, even if we say so ourselves.

Easy to see through.
