Light-flooded elegance at the opera.

Opera Office Neo, directly adjacent to Hamburg’s State Opera House, is an 8-storey commercial and office building with an underground garage in the basement. The modern architecture merges harmoniously with its surroundings. In the facade on the street side, calcium silicate elements alternate with coloured metal. On the courtyard side the building has a curved form. The semicircular atrium in the centre of the building and the room-high window frontages give the offices a very bright and light-flooded effect.

The load-bearing construction responds to the elegance and openness of the rooms with widely-spanning flat floor slabs and filigree pillars. The shape of the atrium is underlined by the arrangement of the pillars. The transition from the round floor plan of the upper storeys to the rectangular garage is organised with a retaining level above the ground floor. The basement storey has been executed as a watertight reinforced concrete construction.

Due to the inner-city location and heavily built-up surrounding area, extensive underpinning and shoring measures were necessary. Soldier pile walls and bore pile walls were employed. The adjacent buildings were thus protected from damage and the site area was optimally used. The planning for this was both exciting and challenging. As a result, Opera Office Neo fits – apparently effortlessly – into the townscape.
