Hamburg’s most dominant office building has grown by two additional stories. The Unilever-Haus at Dammtorwall is considered to be one of the most architecturally outstanding administration buildings of the early 1960s and has long been an established feature in Hamburg’s city skyline. It embodies the representative architecture of a company from the period of the post-war "economic miracle" and sets an example of international modernity. Therefore, the building is protected today as a historical monument.
The Unilever-Haus became the Emporio Tower. The monument became a model building of the 21st century – in both structural, energy conservational, organisational and functional terms. The technical installations, extension and façade were completely renovated.
Concurrently, the building structure was given a complete makeover: demolition, reconstruction, renovation, expansion, reinforcement...
The new name "Emporio" is derived from Spanish and means a traditional "market place", very appropriate for the old Hanseatic city of Hamburg, of which the Emporio Tower offers a unique view.
