Back in the limelight.
A corner house with a history: Known a century ago as Hotel Belvedere, it was one of the best addresses on the Alster, later as a coffee house the favourite meeting place for the "movers and shakers", and finally into the1960’s the social centre of the city as a variety theatre of world-renown.
After that things grew quieter around Haus Vaterland on the corner between Ballindamm and Jungfernstieg. The lustre of the old days had faded.
Now, perhaps, a bit of that has returned, if in a wholly new form! To that end, the two lower floors along with the basement were gutted and a new, modern structure was "inserted". A provisional steel structure provided the necessary stability for the upper floors in the meantime.
A new arcade with two shopping floors invites visitors on Jungfernstieg to do some window shopping – and to a stroll through the adjoining Europa Passage.
Now, Haus Vaterland belongs once again to the ensemble around the Binnenalster, the "living room" of Hamburg. The corner house with a past is now a corner house of the present. And one with a future.
