Large buildings for delicate instruments.
For the expansion of the Hamburg factory premises of Olympus, existing production halls had to be demolished and replaced by a new building.
As high-tech specialist within the Olympus Corporation, Olympus Surgical Technologies Europe is the development and manufacturing center for endoscopy, bipolar high-frequency surgery, systems integration and reprocessing. With a total workforce of 1,700 employees in Hamburg and further locations in Teltow (Berlin), Přerov (Czech Republic) and Cardiff (Wales) the company stands for outstanding performance in medical diagnostic and therapy and offers the full range of most modern endoscopy applications from single products to procedure oriented systems solutions. The new structure in Hamburg contains areas for production and repair as well as space for storage and logistics.
The new building comprises three interconnected sections, each with four upper storeys in solid masonry construction and a penthouse floor in steel frame construction. The new structure is linked to the adjacent existing building via two bridges. The challenge for us as structural engineers was to plan the reconstruction measures during regular operation.
Our top priority is to progress the building work. Therefore our planning is conducted in parallel to the ongoing construction activities. Close collaboration between all the planning partners involved will bring this project to a successful conclusion.
