Extension for protected Schumacher building.
It was a major architectural challenge. Adjacent to the protected building of the Meerweinstraße District School, a modern and spacious three-court gymnasium was to be erected because the old gym and sports field could no longer meet the requirements of modern physical education.
The new construction consists of two building elements. The entrance area with its inviting glass facade is reached by a spacious external staircase and contains the changing, shower and equipment rooms.
Staying under cover, the schoolchildren can move beneath a slender and widely projecting canopy which thus expresses the connection between the old school building and the new gymnasium not only in architectural terms. With its high-quality brick facade, the gym itself stands out from the entrance area.
The gym’s interior is marked by wide-spanned trusses and transverse skylights. During the assembly work, the dimensions of the c. 27 metre long, very slender laminated timber trusses were visible. Even adults could only reach the upper edge with outstretched arms.
