A new sales arena on an old foundation.

As the link connecting Gänsemarkt and Poststraße, Gerhofstraße is one of the most popular shopping streets in Hamburg’s inner city. It was high time to replace the former postmodern structure from the 1970s with a fresh and modern building.

A challenge was the integration of the new building into its heavily built-up surroundings. During the building work, safeguarding measures had to be taken to prevent any unplanned subsidence of the neighbouring buildings. As a cost optimisation measure, the existing water-impermeable basement construction of the old building was reused for the new structure. The existing foundation of large bore piles was reinforced in some places with micro grouting piles. In some areas the sole was set deeper for its new uses.

The emerging new building is designed as a slender reinforced concrete skeleton construction with staggering of the upper storeys and a largely pillar-free ground plan.

In spite of the sometimes difficult intermediate conditions of the building work, a new and exclusive location for boutiques and offices in the heart of Hamburg could be created on schedule.
