New contract.

Renovation of the Bremerhaven connecting canal.

11.09.2023 - We are pleased about a new planning contract.

The connecting canal provides the link between the two regulated, inner-city harbour basins, the Old Harbour and New Harbour. The structure was built between 1926 and 1928 and consists of a gravity wall on a close-meshed timber pile grating. Two bascule bridges, several culverts, engine houses and a wheelhouse are integrated into the structure.

After almost 100 years, the bascule bridges still provide an important transport link to the Klimahaus in Bremerhaven. Furthermore, the entire ensemble of the connecting canal is listed as a historical monument.

The timber pile foundation has been damaged and weakened by the infestation of the borer mussel. For this reason, the construction must be strengthened.
