A foundation for Hamburg’s stars.
Ever since the first rebuilding phase 13 years ago, the Planetarium in the old water tower has been a real magnet for the public. So an extension, with the creation of completely new access facilities – also for disabled access – and new rooms for visitors and staff, was a logical consequence.
The planning of the new spaces in the plinth and the extensions to the existing foyer level on the first floor involved considerable interventions in the existing construction.
The most spectacular measures here were three approx. 2 metre wide separating cuts in the foundation ring, the demolition of all the load-bearing supports for the floor over the entrance foyer and the installation of temporary supports during the construction period. All interventions were accompanied by intensive technical measurement work.
The building’s owner, its user, and the representatives of the historical monument conservation authorities were all enthusiastic about the impression created by the new rooms, both in the foyer and in the new areas in the plinth structure behind the earth wall. This enthusiasm, by the way, was also shared by the architects. And naturally also by the structural engineers.
