Between Landungsbrücken and Elbphilharmonie.

The location of Hamburg’s best-known waterfront promenade could hardly be more prominent. It acts as a link and walkway for strollers between Landungsbrücken and Speicherstadt, and it also connects with the HafenCity district and Hamburg’s new landmark, the Elbphilharmonie. Therefore, alongside its functionality as a flood protection barrier, a high level of design quality is required.

The old structure had protected Hamburg’s citizens from floods since the 1960s. But it was no longer adequate for today’s more stringent flood protection requirements and needed to be renewed. The new construction – a massive structure on deep foundations – has been built out by c. 3 metres into the Elbe river. For future security, the protective height has been raised to up to +8.90 metres above standard zero water level. The flood barrage at Baumwall was also renewed in the course of the building works.

The prize-winning design opens up the promenade to both its urban surroundings and the waterfront. The superstructure with its integrated parking level is designed with generously-proportioned staircases, looking alternately towards the Elbe and towards the city.

Following the completion of the new promenade, Hamburg’s citizens and tourists can stroll between Landungsbrücken and the Elbphilharmonie with an impressive panorama view of the port, while at the same time looking confidently into the future.
