Why is the building called "Tichelhaus"?

02.11.2023 - The work to secure the building pit and install the pile foundation was completed on schedule. Meanwhile the base slab has been produced and the first crane erected. For a prominent corner site on Willy-Brandt-Straße, the Swiss architects Christ und Gantenbein have designed a striking building that reflects the special urban development character of this location and, with its red brick façade, recreates the old building culture of Hamburg. The bricks are not only visually distinctive, but also give the building its name: “Tichel” means brick in Low German dialect.

We were able to make our contribution as structural engineers. The design challenges are not visible at first glance. As always, they lie in the details, in this case in the special brick façade and in the subsoil, where a multitude of obstacles, pipes, existing foundations and the old quay wall on the Nikolaifleet all had to be considered when planning the building pit support and the pile foundation.
