First labyrinth weir completed in Germany.

14.01.2026 - Construction work on the new weir structure in Schorfheide is in its final stages and its regular commissioning is now imminent.

Both the weir pillars and the striking labyrinth walls have been completed. The steel hydraulic components have also been installed, as have the operating and maintenance walkways. This led to a special milestone being reached on 16 December 2025, when Germany's first labyrinth weir was flooded for the first time.

The new weir structure is now on the verge of transitioning to regular operation.

The Labyrinth Weir sets new standards in modern hydraulic engineering. An ensemble of three labyrinth weirs is being built to replace the existing and ageing weir structures at the barrages in Schorfheide, Zaaren and Regow. Compared to conventional weirs, labyrinth weirs can significantly increase the discharge capacity with the same clearance width. This type of weir is familiar in the USA and has now been built in Germany for the first time.
