Looking back 10 years ago: Inauguration of the HCU.
02.06.2024 – Exactly 10 years ago today, HafenCity Universiy Hamburg celebrated the academic inauguration of the new building in the HafenCity.
The move to the new building laid the foundations for interdisciplinary research and teaching with a high degree of practical relevance in the centre of HafenCity. Since then, Europe's largest inner-city urban development project has offered students and academics the attraction of an urban laboratory on their own doorstep.
The structure itself fully lives up to the expectations for a University of the Built Environment. The design is marked by wide projections and roof spans. The northern and southern wings project freely by up to 15 metres.
The site, directly on the waterfront behind an older anchored quay wall construction, and the securing of the building against flooding, demanded special technical qualities in the planning and execution of the required pile foundation and basement.
