We were allowed in: Tour of the old Elbe Tunnel construction site.

27.11.2023 - Last week we were allowed to visit the construction site at the old Elbe Tunnel. The Elbe Tunnel at St. Pauli was opened in 1911 and is a technical masterpiece of its time. The two approx. 426-metre-long tunnels run under the Elbe River from St. Pauli to Steinwerder at a depth of approx. 24 metres below the surface.

Both tunnels are currently being renovated in accordance with the requirements of preservation. Following the successful remediation of the eastern tunnel, the western tunnel is currently undergoing remediation. The main task of the remediation work is to repair the historic steel sections, which are over 110 years old (joint sealing, bonding, corrosion protection), in order to restore the safe and permanent impermeability of the tunnels. This complex work is not an everyday occurrence and represents a challenge.

We are very pleased that we were able to visit this interesting construction site and would like to thank the company that is carrying out the work.
